                 THE HOLY SPIRIT IN PAUL'S WRITINGS


  I. Paul associates the Spirit with:
      A. Spiritual power.         1 Thessalonians 1:5
      B. Inner joy.               1 Thessalonians 1:6
      C. Moral purity.            1 Thessalonians 4:4-8
      D. Religious commitment.    2 Thessalonians 2:13
 II. Special details about the Spirit from Paul.
      A. The Spirit bears witness within our hearts that we are God's
           children.    Romans 8:16
      B. The Spirit enables us to call God "Abba," Father.
           Romans 8:15, Galatians 4:6
      C. The Spirit assists us in our prayers.        Romans 8:26
III. Main emphasis of Paul:  The Spirit's work within people.
      A. Spirit-indwelt people exhibit fruit:     Galatians 5:22-23
      B. Christians are the temple of the Spirit.    1 Corinthians 3:16
      C. The Spirit unleashes God's resurrection power in us.  Romans 8:11
 IV. The warfare of the Spirit.
      A. The spirit lusts against the flesh.     Galatians 5:17
          1) God's Spirit or human spirit?
          2) Set minds on the things of the Spirit.       Romans 8:5
      B. Christians can be fleshly or spiritual.          1 Cor 3:1-2
          1) There are degrees of spirituality.           Ephesians 5:18
              a) Believers can choose to be filled with the Spirit.
          2) Living by the Spirit gives freedom.          2 Cor 3:17    
              a) Legalism is the opposite.                Romans 7:6   
              b) The Spirit can deliver us from sin.      Romans 8:2
