On January 20, 2012, the website Megaupload.com was shut down by the government. Apparently most of their material was copyrighted songs, movies and television shows. Some of their material was the various versions of the Kerux Database. I have since uploaded the files to similar websites like FileFactory but they may suffer the same fate eventually.
The upload sites have a downside - not only is much of their content illegal, they also have racy ads and lots of irritating tricks to get users to pay for premium service. The upside for me is huge - the sites are free and can handle very large files. My files were downloaded through this service several thousand times.
The Kerux2010 version of the database is 280 megabytes. On my personal Globat.com webservice I would have to break it into 28 separate files because they have a 10 megabyte file size limit. (This is why my old system for building the database through supplements required so many files.) Without sites like Megaupload my only alternative is to mail out CDs; I did this for a few years and it was very time-consuming. I would rather not go back to that.
Perhaps a "torrent" type arrangement could be worked out in the future, where users share these large files by using their own computers as webservers. For now, I will seek alternative file upload sites, as long as they last. If a link to such a site from my webpages fails, come back in a day or two. I am persistent.
